Large Ruminants

TALIRI is conducting research on large ruminant with the aim of improving the breed which can perform well in a seven ecological zones of Tanzania. Various studies aim to develop animals that withstand Tanzania's warm environment by crossbreeding bos tauras with heat-tolerant bos indicus cattle from Asia and South America and then crossbreeding them to indigenous African breeds, especially those predominant in Tanzania and East Africa, that are tolerant of disease, heat, harsh environments and poor pastures.

Despite continued research to improve the indigineous animals to find the best animals for milk and meat production, we have continued to conduct research and provide education on how to make farming better for our pastoralists. Our goal is to bring them out of the unproductive natural herding and make them modern and commercial breeders. We conduct research and promotion of animal management, infrastructure development, grazing production, marketing and value chain and improvements in health management for large ruminants.

The following studies have been conducted, ongoing and others are expected to take place soon:

1. Research on the modern dairy cows so they can adapt the environment of Tanzania. The study focuses on how best to raise the exotic breeds such as Friesian, Jersey, Ayrshire, Girlando, Danish Red, Brown Swiss and Simmental in the Tanzanian environment.

2. Research on the modern beef cattle so they can adapt Tanzania's environment. The study focuses on how best to rise the bos taurus and bos indicus cattle, such as Brahman, Sahiwal, Simmental, Beefmaster, Angus, Hereford, Charolais and Chianina in Tanzanian environment.

3. The study of the cross breed dairy cattle suitable for coastal region. We're currently have developed best dairy cattle for coastal  region at TALIRI Tanga center.

4. Study of dairy and beef cattle suitable for farmers in central regions of Tanzania which characterised with semiarid dry lands. The study has led to the discovery of the Mpwapwa breed which is performing well in dry spell areas

5. Research and conservation of the best indigenous beef cattle of Ankole, Borani, Singida White, Iringa Red and Ufipa

6. Research and development of the best cross breed beef cattle (Best Indigenous cattle x Bos taurus beef cattle x Boss indicus beef cattle)

7. Research on Water Buffalo for meat and dairy production in Tanzanian environments
